Made it to Syria!

So...I'm still not sure if my sneaky attempt to circumvent the Syrian national firewall against facebook and typepad worked, but I'm trying another sneaky way using my iPhone typepad app on a cafe's wifi setup. So tom and I (and a Finnish dude) made it across the border from turkey into Syria at about midnight after four hours of hanging out with border police, secret police, and other fun characters. The Aussie and the Finn got their visas without a problem, but as I suspected - mine was the tricky one. They had a bunch of different people talk to me, asked for the names of my parents, faxed my entire passport and visa request to Damascus, and generally chuckled at me whenever they passed. They told me it might be an hour, a day, or (as the official line goes) not at all. After about three hours I started being a bit more forceful, tested alexis back in the states for a hotel name and address in Damascus, and then convinced them that I was not in fact a spy and that they could find me at my hotel. They let me in.

I'm currently sitting in a cafe in old town Damascus getting ready to eat a shishkebab. At least for the next two days, text my phone or email me(both can be found on my facebook page) if you need to get a hold of me.

Always an adventure,
AJMade it to Syria!

Made it to Syria...but everything is blocked...

Hey all,
I've made it into Syria after about 4 hours answering questions and waiting for a fax to come in saying I was "okay" to enter at the border and 5 more hours in buses to Damascus. I don't even know if this is going to work because Facebook is blocked here and I am unable to log into my TypePad blog or retrieve my upload by email option....soooo...I am attempting to post a note to my facebook blog via an upload to my TypePad blog via my Flickr account...got that? Don't you love being sneaky? Let's see if it works. I will be here for at least one night, maybe two before heading to Beirut where I'm pretty sure Facebook is not blocked and I can rejoin the connected world.

Hopefully this uploads so you all don't think I'm someplace unpleasant. I'm looking forward to exploring the Cradle of Civilization now.

Climbing Kili...or How Not to Climb Kili...

Aj_at_the_top_of_africa In hindsight, my training regimen of karaoke, cigars and martinis probably wasn’t the greatest idea in the world…

This thought, and one that involves my incessant need to pee, cycle through my head as I place one foot in front of the other in the pitch black night – broken only by the headlamps of my guide and I (my climbing partner had long since turned around out of sheer exhaustion), the couple dozen other brave souls, and the breathtaking canopy of stars above us all.  Despite these thoughts and the biting cold, I am focused on one goal – summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Overlanding in Africa

Map_nct56atc So…Those of your interested in what I’ll be up to for the next two months (technically 56 days in all), here is my promised preview of now through November 11.  I’ll be honest, I clearly had no idea what I was getting myself into when I signed on for this trip a few weeks ago.  Case in point – I found out a week ago that I would be tracking mountain gorillas in Rwanda (something for which people wait years to get permits and the opportunity to do).  So, without further adieu – the official preview of my next two months in Africa…

Rwanda and Gorillas

I've been rolling through East Africa for the last few days, and will have a proper posting about that (as well as my novel of a Kilimanjaro post) to put up when I get back from...Rwanda!  Yeah...I had no idea I was going here, nor what I would be doing.  Apparently I'm going to be trekking to find and hang out with the endangered mountain gorilla.  We cross into Rwanda from Uganda tomorrow and then spend the next four days going into the mountains to spend time with the gorillas.  In my downtime, I'm hoping to see the genocide museum, catch up on some writing, and try to find a place in Kigali to upload my pictures.  So yeah...gorillas...definitely wasn't expecting that...
